A Literacy Matters Endowment Fund has been established through the Waccamaw Community Foundation by a former Freedom Readers board member. The primary purpose of the fund will be to provide grants to Freedom Readers, Inc. and Horry County Literacy Council, Inc. for books and teaching materials or for programmatic needs. The foundation will introduce the fund to a wider audience to encourage and nurture its growth. The Myrtle Beach Sunrise Rotary Club presented Freedom Readers with 10 sets of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series on Thursday May 25, one for each site operating in Horry and Georgetown this summer. Rotarians stopped by the Freedom Readers office to make the special delivery. From left to right: Todd Rigler, Nate Rohler, Mark Nappier and Don Risher. Todd is an attorney at The Pearce Law Group. Nate is a banker at United Community Bank and incoming club President. Mark and Don are both partners at Joye, Nappier and Risher.
The area’s future talent was on display at the Freedom Readers 3rd Annual Red Carpet Awards ceremony at Horry-Georgetown Technical College on Saturday April 29. Twelve teams of scholars and tutors showed up and showed out, letting the more than 200 crowd members know what they learned from the spring 2017 fall session theme, Money Matters. Superior public speaking abilities, growing vocabularies, enthusiastic recitations, and positive music set this event apart from past Freedom Readers events. Freedom Readers will participate in Palmetto Giving Day on May 2, 2017. Giving Day is a nationwide online fundraising effort, organized in local communities. $83 dollars covers the cost of participating in one session of Freedom Readers program. We have set a goal for Palmetto Giving Day to raise $8,300, to cover the cost of all scholars in Georgetown for the summer session, our most critical season. Our annual Red Carpet Event will be held at the Maeser Auditorium, Horry Georgetown Technical College, 950 Crabtree Lane, Myrtle Beach at Market Common on April 29 at 1:00 pm. We invite all participants and friends and family to come and share in the successes of our scholars, tutors, and team leaders.
The Mid-Session Tutor Training is a great opportunity for all tutors to network with tutors from other sites, improve their tutoring skills, and share ideas for our meetings. Our next Mid-Session Tutor Training will be held on Saturday, March 11 from 10 am – noon, at the South Strand Recreation Center on Scipio Lane in Myrtle Beach. A gift card for $25 (to cover the cost of gas) will be awarded to each tutor from the site that has the greatest attendance. Will your site win??
